AOI SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL

Why we do what we do

Imagine if you had to leave your home when you were 18 years old without family to help you find your way in the world. What if you had no one in your life to help you find a place to live, drive you to college, get a job, and all the other things that we need to do to start our lives as adults.

Every year, thousands of youth in the United States age out of the foster care system without family support. While some may be orphans and have no family, most of the time the youths’ parents are unable to take care of their children for various reasons, such as that they in prison, addicted to drugs, or struggling with mental illness.

Since 2010, Aging Out Institute (AOI) has been dedicated to finding and sharing resources and strategies that can help these youth age out of state care and into independence. As part of our mission, we are launching the first national awards program designed to recognize foster caregivers and organizations that are implementing strategies and programs that are successfully supporting these vulnerable youth through the difficult transition to adulthood.

We will also capture and publish the award winners’ effective and innovative strategies and programs and share them with the foster care community. This is the greater benefit of the awards program – sharing the award winning practices that are working well so that others can model their own practices after them, thereby improving how we support youth aging out of foster care throughout the country.

More about aging out of foster care

Young people age out of foster care when they have reached the maximum age the state will support them in the foster system. In some states, aging out occurs at 18, while in others it is 21. This happens when states have failed to reunite the youth with their families or to place them in permanent homes. If you want to know more, this interview with Dr. John DeGarmo provides an excellent overview of aging out of foster care. The video is about 24 minutes long and is packed with great information. He answers questions about what aging out of foster care means, why youth end up aging out of care, the challenges they face when they age out, three key things that can be done to help prepare the youth for independence, and different ways people who want to help can help. What you can do to help

In 2018, we are launching the first of what will be an annual awards program. We’re asking you to help us launch this program through one of the sponsorship opportunities described in this proposal.

We believe that our mission to help young people who face aging out of foster care will resonate with your company’s values. Together, we know we can positively impact these young people’s lives and help them become productive adults with purpose, self-sufficiency, and hope for the future.

The benefits to you

As your marketing partner, AOI takes our sponsorship agreement seriously. We make a promise to help youth aging out of foster care, and in return we promise to deliver the best sponsorship benefits available through our awards program.

Communicate your commitment to social responsibility

Customers are getting more and more discerning about the social responsibility of the companies with which they do business. What better way to communicate your values than by sponsoring an event that aligns with their own values?

Tell your story and win new customers

Tell the AOI Awards Program audience how much your company cares about youth in foster care. Every time they visit the AOI website to search for resources, read one of the award winner strategy papers or attend an award winner webinar, your brand and message will be front and center. You will have brand exposure to thousands of people when you become a partner with AOI for the AOI National Awards Program through sponsorship. You will reach them through the AOI website and our social network. Ceremony sponsors will also have in-person access to thousands of child welfare professionals who attend the 31st National Independent Living Conference in San Antonio, TX.

Give your staff something to smile about

Responsible and caring companies like yours know how important it is to get staff involved in giving back to the community. Your organization will be given a free membership to Aging Out Institute if you sponsor our awards program, so your staff will be able to download and read the stories about the foster parents and programs that were able to win awards thanks to your company’s support.

About Lynn Tonini, M.Ed.

Lynn is the Founder/Owner of Aging Out Institute. She was a former foster youth who aged out of foster care herself at the age of 18. With the emotional support of extended family, she graduated from Gettysburg College in 1989 with a B.A. in Psychology as an independent student, paying her own way with hard work and perseverance. She then went on to earn her M.Ed. in Training and Development from Penn State.

Lynn has worked over 20 years in the training and development field, designing, developing, and implementing training projects for a variety of clients in many different industries. Her project management skills were honed by leading several large-scale training initiatives for companies with hundreds to thousands of employees.

Lynn worked 12 years at the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania, training the residential staff  how to work with at-risk youth from poverty stricken backgrounds. She also has five years of experience running a global awards program that was designed to recognize and capture the best practices among corporate learning organizations around the world.

It is this combination of education, experiences, and skills that makes Lynn uniquely qualified to manage and launch a national level awards program dedicated to the professionals who work with youth aging out of foster care.
